Borst Meets Challenge of Second-Story Landscaping Project at Sanzari’s Court Plaza Complex
Diverse Plantings, Stonework and Walkways Grace New Hackensack Complex Above Street Level
HACKENSACK, N.J., Sept. 3, 2009 – Borst Landscape and Design (Borst), based in Allendale, N.J., completed a challenging landscaping project recently for Alfred Sanzari Enterprises’ Court Plaza complex, near the Bergen County Courthouse in Hackensack. This is the second commercial landscaping renovation Borst has completed for Sanzari Enterprises; last fall Borst designed the new grounds at Sanzari’s Heights Plaza office buildings in Hasbrouck Heights.
“This new location at Court Plaza presented some interesting challenges in terms of installation because of the garden beds’ location above street level,” said Mike Cioffi, director of Borst’s commercial division, who headed up the project. “The size and scope of this project also allowed us to introduce a broader variety of plant life, which promotes a healthier garden environment,” he added.
At Court Plaza, Borst’s landscape professionals had to work around the fact that the garden beds and plantings were not at street level but rather on the second story of the complex, reachable only by elevator or stairs. To surmount these obstacles without interfering with the buildings’ occupants, Borst brought in specially equipped trucks to transfer top soil, mulch, flowers and trees to the above-grade area.
“We brought in 100 yards of top soil in less than two days and 120 yards of mulch,” noted Cioffi, of the preparations for the hundreds of feet of garden beds the firm’s landscapers designed and created around the three buildings in Court Plaza. Once the garden beds were in place, Cioffi’s staff planted different types of flowering trees that will bloom in stages, to enhance the magnolias that were already there. They also planted a wide range of flowers and evergreen trees for contrast and deciduous trees that will provide different colors throughout the year as the leaves change.
Cioffi explained that the existing landscape had been done in a monoculture style, meaning one type of hedge plant was used, with one other kind of tree or planting punctuating the landscape. “We brought in more biodiversity to help create healthier soil and a more natural landscaped look,” he said, adding that planting various species together is preferable because it curbs the spread of plant or tree disease. Plus, different species of plants and trees give back something different to the soil, which promotes a healthier landscape overall. To further enhance the surroundings, the Borst team designed each garden bed with room in the corners for a changing seasonal floral display throughout the year.
“We were very impressed with how Mike and his team solved the issue of how to get all the soil, mulch and plantings up to the landscaping location without disturbing our tenants,” said Dave Cali, Vice President, Property Manager at Alfred Sanzari Enterprises. “Borst’s clever transport solution saved an enormous amount of time and man hours, and of course now our tenants have gracious, colorful surroundings to enjoy every season.”
Borst’s growing Commercial Division has completed major landscape design/build projects in Bergen County for Atlantic Stewardship Bank in Midland Park, Temple Emanuel in Woodcliff Lake, and the Orchard Elementary School in Ridgewood among others. The award-winning, full-service firm also handles several ongoing maintenance assignments for area office and multifamily properties.
